A Canadian homeowner in Calgary has become the center of controversy after adorning their property with multiple MAGA and American flags, drawing vandalism and heated online commentary. The homeowner, who is an American expatriate, reported that bagged dog feces and eggs have been thrown at their residence. Police confirmed they received a report of vandalism on August 23 and are reviewing the situation, though they found insufficient grounds for criminal charges based on initial information.
The homeowner stated that the display was intended to express pride in being American and support for former President Donald Trump. "We're proud Americans, we support the president, and that was the idea behind the flags," the homeowner told The Canadian Press. The property features a large American flag flanked by a "Trump: Make America Great Again" sign and another reading "Trump 2028: Third Term and Beyond." The homeowner clarified the latter was a joke, acknowledging the constitutional limitations on presidential terms.
Owners of the mansion, who moved to Canada over a decade ago for work, expressed confusion and dismay over the backlash. "I pay taxes and work in Calgary, and I do not understand why my political foes want to run me out of town," the homeowner said, adding that such actions are not conducive to a democratic society.
The display has divided the local community. Some neighbors defended the homeowner's right to display the flags on their private property. "He's got every right to do whatever he wants on his own land. It's hurting no one. If no one likes his point of view, they can look the other way," one neighbor told Calgary City News.
However, others questioned the decision to display American political symbols in Canada. "Why are you bringing American politics into Canada? That has nothing to do with Alberta," another resident asked. A third neighbor suggested that displaying flags of other nations typically elicits different reactions, implying a double standard. "I've been following this on social media, and if it was another country's flag and people were saying what they're saying about this one, it would be considered a hate crime. What's fair for one should be fair for the other," they commented.
This is not the first instance of backlash for the homeowners; their property was reportedly vandalized in 2024 following Trump's election victory. The current controversy also emerges amid heightened trade tensions between the United States and Canada. The Trump administration has previously threatened tariffs on Canadian imports, prompting retaliatory measures from Canada. The situation has been further strained by public comments and social media actions from US officials directed at Canada.
Despite the ongoing disputes, the homeowner expressed optimism about the future relationship between the two countries, stating, "I believe the countries will eventually kiss and make up."
