Camp Mystic, the Christian all-girls sleepaway camp, filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, according to court records. The Chapter 11 filing follows a deadly flood in July 2025 that killed 27 people at the camp's Guadalupe River location in the Texas Hill Country.
According to the filing, Camp Mystic has liabilities exceeding $10 million. Paul Yetter, an attorney representing seven victims' families, stated that the bankruptcy filing will not prevent responsible parties from being held accountable and that the victims' families seek justice.
In April, Camp Mystic had indicated plans to reopen at its Cypress Lake location, but later withdrew its application. This decision came after calls from victims' families and officials, including Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, to block the camp's license until the flood was thoroughly investigated. Patrick argued that the camp should not reopen until the investigation was complete.
The parents of 8-year-old Cile Steward, one of the deceased campers whose body has not been recovered, also expressed their desire for the camp not to reopen while their daughter remains missing.
An investigation into the flood, led by attorney Casey Garrett for the state legislature, reviewed the camp's policies. Garrett's review, based on interviews with about 150 individuals including campers, counselors, camp owners, and victims' families, indicated inadequate training and drills for flood threats. A written report of these findings is expected later this year.
The Texas Rangers have also initiated a criminal investigation into Camp Mystic. Families of the victims have also filed lawsuits against the camp.
In response to the lawsuits, Camp Mystic previously stated it continues to pray for the grieving families and asks for God's healing and comfort. Jeff Ray, legal counsel for Camp Mystic, countered that they intend to demonstrate the floodwaters were unexpectedly extreme and that no adequate warning systems were in place. Ray also stated they will thoroughly respond to accusations in the legal filings regarding the actions of Camp Mystic and Dick Eastland, who also died in the incident.
