Tiana Bender-Santiago, a 28-year-old from Ventura, California, has gained viral attention for her unexpected pregnancy, a development she was told was highly unlikely due to a childhood cancer diagnosis. At age 13, Bender-Santiago was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. Following treatment, she was informed that she would likely never be able to have children, with one fertility doctor reportedly describing her ovaries as “dusty.”
Despite these prognoses, Bender-Santiago and her husband, Nigel, discovered in early March that she was pregnant. A video documenting their reaction to a positive pregnancy test amassed over 809,000 views online. Bender-Santiago shared the news with the caption, “Take that cancer,” referring to her pregnancy as a “literal miracle.”
Bender-Santiago beat cancer during her high school years. She explained that while egg freezing was discussed, she prioritized immediate cancer treatment. At the time, she found solace in the prospect of adoption, a path she had always considered. Just 5,660 adolescents are diagnosed annually in the U.S. with cancer, representing about 0.3% of all national cancer diagnoses, according to the American Cancer Society.
Experts note that cancer treatments for individuals under 19 can impact reproductive systems and future fertility. Adults may also face similar challenges, sometimes leading them to pursue adoption or surrogacy, or to forgo parenthood altogether.
After marrying Nigel in 2023, the couple settled into married life without expecting a pregnancy. Bender-Santiago initially doubted the positive test results, attributing them to potential chemical pregnancies or hormonal changes, especially since she had been advised that perimenopause was approaching. Belief solidified only after an ultrasound revealed a heartbeat.
The couple is expecting a baby boy in December. Bender-Santiago, considered high-risk due to a pelvic bone defect from her cancer, regularly shares updates on social media. She stated that extra tests were conducted to ensure the baby's health, and all results came back clear, with her doctor describing the baby as “perfectly healthy.”
