Raising a child in California is among the most expensive endeavors in the United States, with costs estimated to surpass $300,000 from infancy to age 18. The state ranks third nationally for the highest childrearing expenses, according to a 2026 study by baby formula brand Kendamil.

Key Cost Drivers

The study analyzed the financial burden of four major parenting necessities across the country: childcare, maternity healthcare, housing, and groceries. California's significant expenses in these areas contribute to its high ranking.

National Comparisons

Parents in California, along with those in Washington, D.C., and Massachusetts, face substantially higher costs compared to families in more affordable regions. Washington, D.C. was identified as the most expensive location, with annual costs averaging $90,046. Massachusetts followed, with California securing the third position.

In contrast, Arkansas was found to be the most affordable state, with annual childrearing costs totaling approximately $36,386. West Virginia and Mississippi also ranked among the least expensive states.

The analysis highlighted a discernible regional pattern, with seven Southern states—including Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Tennessee—appearing in the top 10 most affordable locations. Researchers noted that families in these Southern regions generally benefit from lower overall costs for major household expenses when compared to families in coastal and metropolitan areas.

"The findings suggest that families in parts of the South generally benefit from lower overall costs across several major household expenses compared with families in many coastal and metropolitan areas," the study authors stated. The analysis underscores the significant financial disparities in raising children depending on geographic location within the U.S.
