A man lost his hand after an explosive device detonated while he was collecting fireworks debris on a Northern California beach during the July 4th holiday weekend. The incident occurred on Point St. George Beach in Del Norte County.

Jason Turner and his girlfriend, Pamala, were walking along the beach on Sunday when Turner picked up what was described as a "bomb-like device" that unexpectedly exploded. Pamala reportedly used her shirt as a tourniquet to control the bleeding until first responders arrived.

The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office confirmed their deputies responded to reports of an explosion and found Turner with a severe hand injury. According to a GoFundMe set up by his daughter, Ashley Turner, her father had to undergo an amputation and is awaiting further surgeries. He also sustained vision and hearing loss as a result of the blast.

Ashley Turner provided an update stating that her father has metal fragments in his eyes and will require additional surgeries. His right eardrum was reportedly ruptured, leaving him with no hearing in that ear.

The GoFundMe also noted that Turner is the sole provider for his family of seven. As of Friday, the fundraiser had gathered nearly $100,000 to assist with his medical expenses, with his daughter warning that his injuries may be permanent.

The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office conducted a search of the beach and has launched an investigation into the origin and nature of the explosive device. Authorities are advising the public not to touch any suspected explosive devices if found, but to move to a safe distance and contact law enforcement immediately.
