Josh Collette, a 42-year-old father of five from San Clemente, California, has been left paralyzed from the neck down after a heroic act of bravery on August 15. Collette was at Riviera Beach with his family when he saw a young child, estimated to be around seven years old, struggling in a rip current.
Witnessing the child's mother heading into the water, Collette ran past her and entered the ocean himself to assist. Shortly after entering the water, he struck either rocks or a sandbar, sustaining a severe injury. Bystanders immediately rushed to his aid and helped bring him back to shore. Upon rescue, Collette indicated to his wife that he believed he had broken his neck. Doctors later confirmed the extent of his injuries, determining he was paralyzed from the neck down.
While he has not yet been able to speak, family members have been informed that he is expected to regain this ability. His sister, Hillary Collette, told KTLA that he has remained in good spirits despite his condition. The child Collette attempted to save was able to exit the water safely before he was rescued.
Collette's family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help with the significant medical expenses, long-term therapy, and other associated costs. A family member expressed hope for his recovery on the fundraising page, stating, "The road ahead will be long, and the recovery will not be easy, we’re holding on to hope."
