The Ventana Grill, a popular wedding venue and restaurant perched on a California cliffside, has been ordered to close by September 18 due to fears of collapse into the ocean. The San Luis Obispo Superior Court finalized the decision on August 27, ending a year-long legal battle between the venue's parent company, Old Custom House Inc., and its landlords, CCC PSC Owner.

The landlords initiated the legal proceedings last July, citing geotechnical experts who reported "significant stability issues" on the bluffs where the restaurant is located. They argued that the venue's continued operation posed a risk to public safety, with attorneys for CCC stating that the operating company's stance was a "safe enough for now" gamble "with people's lives."

Old Custom House Inc. had contested the closure, highlighting the potential impact on its 79 employees and the cancellation of numerous booked events. The company argued that the premises should remain open, citing the damage to its business goodwill. However, the court ultimately sided with the landlords, determining that it was unsafe to keep the Ventana Grill operational.

The abrupt closure has left couples with upcoming nuptials scrambling to find alternative venues, with some having only weeks to secure new arrangements. Wedding coordinators have been working to assist affected clients, while other venues in Pismo Beach and nearby areas have offered support on social media. The restaurant, which has served as a wedding venue and dining spot since 2010, is no longer accepting reservations but remained open for visits until September 12.

Event planner Lauren Lula expressed devastation at the closure, having dedicated over a decade of her career to the venue. Local residents have also shared their sadness, describing the Ventana Grill as a beloved spot for brunches and celebrations with a scenic ocean view.

Both sides presented expert testimony from engineers and geologists during the legal proceedings, with evidence contradicting each other. The final court order mandates the cessation of operations by the specified date.
