A comfortable life in major Californian cities is now attainable for a select few, as new research indicates a family of four needs an annual salary of $408,000 to live comfortably in San Francisco. This figure places the city at the top of a new list ranking the most expensive metropolitan areas in the United States.
Following San Francisco, San Jose requires an annual income of $403,000, and Oakland needs $371,000 for a family of four to meet comfortable living standards. These findings come from a study published by SmartAsset, which analyzed 56 major American cities.
The research utilized the MIT Living Wage Calculator to determine the income required for basic necessities, including housing, food, utilities, transportation, and leisure activities. The study applied the 50/30/20 budgeting rule, where 50% of post-tax income covers needs, 30% goes to wants, and 20% is allocated for savings.
In Southern California, Irvine ranked eighth nationally, with a required family income of $327,000, while San Diego followed at twelfth with $313,000. These figures stand in stark contrast to the national median household income for a family of four, which is $124,990, suggesting that most American families would struggle to afford living in these California metros.
Several factors contribute to the high cost of living in California cities, including a significant housing shortage, high tax rates, and stringent state regulations. The median price for a single-family home in California is $930,260, the highest in the U.S. In May, the Bay Area's median home price was $1.45 million, and San Francisco's was $2.2 million.
California also has the nation's highest top marginal income tax rate of 13.3% for high earners. While California cities dominate the top of the list, other major metropolitan areas like Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C., are also identified as having high costs of living.
