Cait Conley has won the Democratic primary for New York’s 17th congressional district, positioning herself to challenge Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in the November general election. Conley, an Army veteran and former national security official, overcame what her campaign described as Republican meddling in the primary process.

Republicans appeared to view Conley as a strong challenger for Lawler, who represents a district that voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. According to reports, a group affiliated with House Republicans ran advertisements questioning Conley's progressive stance on immigration, and Lawler himself reportedly supported one of Conley’s primary opponents.

"It is a very clear signal that he knows we’re going to build a coalition and beat him in November,” Conley stated after her projected victory. Her primary competitors included Beth Davidson, a county legislator, as well as John Cappello, Effie Phillips-Staley, and Mike Sacks.

Lawler, a moderate Republican, has at times diverged from his party's agenda. Last summer, he indicated he might oppose a key tax bill unless it included a significant increase in the state and local tax deduction. The bill ultimately passed with a modest increase.

Conley emphasized her military background, including 16 years of active duty service, with experience in combat zones, and her long-standing ties to the district as assets for the general election. "My service is going to matter a lot in this district, where 20% of registered voters are unaffiliated or independent,” Conley said. She added that in New York’s 17th district, over half of households have a connection to active-duty service members, veterans, first responders, or law enforcement.
