The civilian who bravely intervened to stop a mass shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon is believed to be the father of a student at the school, according to radio dispatch audio. The unidentified man entered the school shortly after the 16-year-old gunman began his attack and engaged the shooter, ultimately killing him.

Emergency dispatchers can be heard in audio shared on Broadcastify relaying the situation to responding officers. "Looks like the shooter has been neutralized – possibly shot by a father at the school," a dispatcher stated, adding, "Not sure about patients at this time. The police are arriving."

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed the incident, stating that the rampage was halted by "a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him." Officers entered the building only after the civilian had subdued the gunman.

The attack resulted in the deaths of three children and one teacher. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek acknowledged the bystander's actions, saying, "To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life, your actions carry a heavy emotional burden and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you."

State Representative Vikki Breese-Iverson expressed gratitude to first responders and the intervening community member. "May the weight of God sit heavy with any soul who justifies this deed," the Republican lawmaker stated, condemning the violence as "senseless."

Following the event, a candlelight vigil was held in Drake Park in Bend for the victims. Makeshift memorials with candles and flowers have also been placed outside the school.
