Hollywood Burbank Airport's extensive $1.3 billion terminal replacement project, known as Elevate BUR, is nearing its completion, with the new passenger terminal scheduled to open on October 13. The modernization effort aims to bring the nearly century-old airport up to current safety standards and traveler expectations.
The new terminal will feature an updated TSA security checkpoint, more spacious gate areas, and an expanded selection of dining and retail options. Airport officials stated that the facility is designed to meet the latest earthquake-resistant building codes and ADA accessibility standards. The original Burbank Airport opened in 1930 during President Herbert Hoover's administration and has since lacked modern safety features.
Elevate BUR will offer a total of 355,000 square feet across two levels and a basement, accommodating fourteen gates. Passengers will benefit from a new ticketing lobby, updated airline check-in counters, modernized baggage claim, and a 45,900-square-foot aircraft boarding area. A new parking garage equipped with EV charging stations and a redesigned airport access road are also part of the upgrade.
The project, which was first unveiled in 2023, broke ground in December of that year. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority is overseeing the construction, with the Holder, Pankow, TEC joint venture as the builder and Jacobs managing the project. The new terminal is being constructed north of the current building. Once operational, the existing, nearly 100-year-old terminal will be demolished.
