Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, stars of the beloved series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," made a notable appearance together on the red carpet at the 2026 Emmy Awards. The duo posed for photographers outside the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday evening.
Gellar, 49, wore a vibrant fuchsia pink dress with her blond hair styled in an updo, while Boreanaz, 57, opted for a classic black suit. The pair, who played onscreen lovers Buffy Summers and Angel respectively, are presenting the award for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series or Movie during the ceremony.
Their reunion comes amidst a period of loss for the "Buffy" cast. Gellar and Boreanaz both acknowledged the challenges faced by their former colleagues. "David and I would like to acknowledge that it has been a tough two years for our beloved cast and crew, and we feel very lucky to have known and worked with such amazing people," Gellar stated during their presentation.
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" originally aired for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. The series, created by Joss Whedon, explored the life of Buffy Summers, a high school student tasked with battling vampires and other supernatural forces. Boreanaz portrayed Angel, a vampire who falls in love with Summers.
Recent years have seen the passing of several cast members. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers, died on February 26, 2025, at age 39 due to complications from diabetes. Nicholas Brendon, who starred as Xander Harris, passed away on March 20, 2026, at 54 from cardiovascular disease and acute pneumonia. Anthony Head, known for his role as Rupert Giles, died on June 1, 2026, at the age of 72 from complications of pneumonia.
Plans for a reboot of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" were reportedly scrapped in March 2026. During their Emmy presentation, Boreanaz humorously remarked, "You know, Sarah, I always thought Buffy and Angel would end up together." Gellar responded with a nod to the canceled reboot, saying, "Well, I guess we won’t find out."
