Brittany Shammas has joined CNN as a national news reporter, the cable network announced Thursday. Shammas will be based in CNN's Washington, D.C. offices and will focus on digital reporting, developing original angles and producing narratives that delve into the people, places, and forces shaping national news.
CNN described Shammas as "an award-winning reporter with a proven ability to uncover stories others miss and tell them with depth, clarity and nuance." The network added that she brings "curiosity, rigor and sharp storytelling instincts" to her work.
Shammas comes to CNN after seven years at The Washington Post, where she most recently worked as a local enterprise reporter focusing on narrative and accountability stories in the D.C. area. She was among approximately 300 journalists laid off from The Washington Post in February amid efforts by owner Jeff Bezos to address the paper's financial losses.
Prior to her role in local enterprise reporting, Shammas covered national breaking news for The Washington Post's general assignment team. Her coverage there included subjects such as natural disasters, mass shootings, and the long-term impacts of the pandemic.
Before joining The Washington Post in 2019, Shammas spent eight years reporting in Florida. She covered education and public safety for the Naples Daily News and the South Florida Sun Sentinel before becoming a staff writer at Miami New Times. Her investigative reporting at Miami New Times on deaths linked to a for-profit correctional healthcare company earned her a Sigma Delta Chi Award.
