Sam Lutfi, the former manager of pop star Britney Spears, has been seen publicly in West Hollywood, making a rare appearance shortly after Spears' latest publicized incident. Lutfi, 51, was photographed leaving the Chateau Marmont on a Friday evening.
Lutfi first entered Spears' life around 2007, during her divorce from Kevin Federline and amidst her well-documented mental health challenges. He served as her manager during a turbulent period. His recent public sighting occurred just two days after Spears was observed standing through the sunroof of a moving vehicle on a freeway in Los Angeles, an event that followed her resolution of a DUI case.
During his public outing, Lutfi adopted a casual style, wearing a black polo shirt, black trousers, and white sneakers. His appearance, with a clean-shaven head and scruffy facial hair, contrasts with his look from the period he was closely involved with Spears, when he often wore a cap and sported a soul patch.
Lutfi's relationship with Spears was intense between 2007 and 2008. Her family accused him of attempting to control her life, finances, and home, leading to a restraining order against him in 2008. This period also marked the beginning of Spears' 13-year conservatorship.
Following these events, Lutfi filed a lawsuit against Spears' family in 2009, alleging defamation and breach of contract, claiming the accusations had damaged his reputation. The lawsuit was settled out of court in September 2016. In 2019, Spears obtained another restraining order against Lutfi, alleging he had made threats against her family.
In July 2021, prior to the termination of her conservatorship, Lutfi posted on X, formerly Twitter, expressing regret and a sense of failure regarding his role in Spears' life. He stated, "I failed her." He reflected on his inability to protect her and acknowledged that both he and Spears paid a heavy price. Last year, on a podcast, Lutfi spoke emotionally about his time with Spears, describing her as a "fantastic friend" and a "great client," and lamenting the lack of support around her at the time.
Spears' recent freeway incident, where she stood through the sunroof of an SUV, drew significant attention. A source told the Daily Mail that Spears was briefly looking at traffic conditions. The singer later addressed the event on Instagram, posting an image of herself and writing, "Arching my back to the heavens to god trying to get back all the years I missed…" She also posted an image of a bruised young girl, contrasting it with her past reality and stating, "Not anymore!"
The freeway event occurred months after Spears resolved her DUI case. She pleaded to a reduced charge of reckless driving, receiving 12 months of probation, a fine, and mandatory DUI education classes. The terms of the agreement included restrictions on her driving under the influence of intoxicants, mandatory chemical testing if requested by police, and limitations on drug and marijuana use unless medically prescribed.
