Actress Tracy-Ann Oberman, known for her roles in "Eastenders" and "Friday Night Dinner," was recently stranded at Liverpool John Lennon Airport when she was refused boarding for a Ryanair flight to Spain. The incident occurred on a Thursday night, as Oberman had planned a short getaway following the completion of filming for a new Netflix series. The 59-year-old actress discovered her passport did not meet the European Union's 10-year validity rule, a regulation that affects many UK passport holders traveling within the Schengen Area.

Despite her passport not expiring until June 2027, it was deemed invalid for travel because it had been issued more than 10 years prior. Oberman expressed her disappointment to the Daily Mail, stating, "I am gutted!!!" She described the current travel system as "all 'computer says no.'"

Post-Brexit Passport Regulations

Following Brexit, the EU implemented stricter rules for UK passport holders. Previously, British passports only needed to be valid for the duration of a stay within the EU. However, the current regulation requires passports to have been issued within the previous 10 years on the day of entry into the EU. This rule applies even if the passport has been renewed and has several months remaining before its official expiry date.

Benjamin Parker, acting head of travel for the Daily Mail, explained that this 10-year age restriction impacts entry to the Schengen Area, which comprises most EU nations, as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and some smaller states. He noted that prior to September 2018, the UK passport office would transfer any remaining validity from an old passport to a new one, potentially extending a passport's usability beyond 10 years. This practice could inadvertently place British passport holders outside the post-Brexit validity period.

Oberman's passport was issued in 2016, making it over a decade old by the time of her attempted travel. She had been scheduled to fly to Spain for a family holiday before commencing rehearsals for a new play. She shared her experience on social media, warning other travelers to verify their passport validity before booking or departing, as this requirement is not always prominently flagged during the booking process.

Similar Incidents

Oberman is not the first UK citizen to be affected by this rule. The 10-year expiry regulation, which came into effect on January 1, 2021, at the conclusion of the Brexit transition period, has caught other travelers off guard. In a similar case, Bolaji Omisade was recently prevented from boarding a flight to Greece at London Gatwick Airport. Her passport, though not expired, had been issued over 10 years earlier, thus failing to meet EU entry standards. Her husband and sons were able to fly on without her.

Another incident involved Chelsea Rodd, who was set to travel to Milan for a birthday celebration. Upon check-in at Gatwick, she was informed that her passport, due to be valid until April 2026, was too old for EU travel as it had been issued more than 10 years prior. This was due to the previous practice of adding extra months from an old passport to a new one, resulting in her passport being valid for 10 years and nine months, which falls outside the EU's ten-year issuance rule.
