Actress Tracy-Ann Oberman, known for her roles in "Eastenders" and "Friday Night Dinner," recently encountered difficulties traveling to the EU when she was denied boarding a Ryanair flight to Spain. The issue stemmed from an EU rule that mandates passports must have been issued within the preceding 10 years for entry into Schengen Area countries.

Oberman, 59, was attempting to travel from Liverpool for a short holiday after completing filming for a Netflix series. Although her passport was valid until June 2027, it had been issued in 2016, making it over 10 years old and thus invalid for EU travel according to the post-Brexit regulations. She expressed her frustration, stating that modern travel often feels dictated by automated systems.

EU Passport Validity Rules

The EU's 10-year passport validity rule for non-EU citizens, including UK passport holders, came into effect on January 1, 2021, following the end of the Brexit transition period. Previously, British passports only needed to be valid for the duration of the stay. Now, for entry into the Schengen Area, a passport must have been issued no more than 10 years prior to the date of entry. Additionally, passports must remain valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay.

This rule can be particularly confusing for individuals who renewed their passports before September 2018. At that time, the UK passport office had a policy of transferring any remaining validity from an old passport to a new one. This meant some passports could have an effective validity period of 10 years and nine months, inadvertently falling outside the EU's 10-year issue date requirement.

Impact on Travelers

Oberman's experience is not unique. Other British travelers have also been caught out by this regulation. Bolaji Omisade, 35, was recently prevented from boarding a flight to Greece at London Gatwick Airport for a family trip because her passport, though not expired, had been issued more than a decade earlier. Similarly, Chelsea Rodd was unable to join a celebratory trip to Milan due to her passport being over 10 years old, despite having several months of validity remaining.

Oberman took to social media platform X to share her experience and warn others to double-check their passport issuance dates before traveling, noting that booking platforms do not always flag this specific rule. She also questioned Ryanair's policy of fining passengers for non-compliance, suggesting that such fines could contribute to airlines' strict enforcement of the rule.
