The owner of Minocqua Brewing Company, Kirk Bangstad, has had his operating permit revoked, effective August 4, due to illegally transporting beer from Illinois without the necessary permits or paying appropriate taxes. Bangstad, however, has stated his intention to continue selling beer at the Wisconsin establishment.
Bangstad has been involved in numerous legal disputes, facing charges that include criminal defamation, harassment, bail jumping, disorderly conduct, and defrauding donors to his super PAC by allegedly funneling funds to himself for legal fees. He has also been accused of attempting to disrupt local events, such as the town's Fourth of July parade.
The brewery has gained notoriety for its politically charged branding, with beers named after political figures and events, and signage such as "drink MAGA tears" and "Antifa parking only."
