The Milwaukee Brewers tied baseball’s modern-era record for the largest shutout victory Tuesday night, defeating the Seattle Mariners 22-0. The win also matched a franchise record for runs scored in a single game by the Brewers.
Since 1901, only two other games have ended with a 22-0 score: a Sept. 16, 1975, game where the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out the Chicago Cubs, and a Sept. 16, 1975, game where the Cleveland Indians shut out the New York Yankees.
The Brewers, who hold the major league’s best record at 78-48, saw contributions from multiple players with significant offensive output. Christian Yelich, David Hamilton, and Luis Lara each hit three-run homers, while Jake Bauers added a two-run shot. Hamilton recorded a career-high four RBIs, matching Yelich and Lara, who also drove in four runs apiece. Garrett Mitchell contributed four hits.
Brewers pitcher Kyle Harrison (10-3) pitched five innings, allowing only two hits. He was followed by Shane Drohan, Grant Anderson, and catcher Gary Sánchez, who completed the five-hitter. Sánchez allowed two hits in the ninth inning while throwing pitches under 40 mph.
Bauers' first run of the game came in the first inning after he doubled and scored on a play at the plate involving catcher Cal Raleigh and an outfield throw from Randy Arozarena. Yelich’s homer extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning. Hamilton and Bauers hit homers in the sixth, making the score 11-0. Milwaukee scored nine runs in the eighth inning against Mariners infielder Leo Rivas, including Lara’s first career home run.
