Brenton Ragless, a popular figure at Nine's South Australian affiliate, is emerging as a leading candidate to fill the vacant co-host position on 'The Today Show' following Karl Stefanovic's departure. Network executives are reportedly seeking to 'freshen up' the program and potentially close the ratings gap with rival show 'Sunrise' on Seven.

Sources indicate that Ragless has been considered for a role on 'The Today Show' previously. He was reportedly a contender when Stefanovic was initially removed from the program in 2018, before Stefanovic's return in 2020. Ragless also has prior experience filling in for Stefanovic during leave in 2018 and 2019.

Industry experts suggest that Ragless could bring a new energy to the show. His potential appointment could coincide with a strategic move by Nine to gain ground in the competitive breakfast television market. "He could be a chance to freshen up and bring a whole new energy," one industry expert told The Australian.

Meanwhile, co-host Sarah Abo's position on 'The Today Show' is also reportedly being watched closely. Channel Seven is said to be considering a bid for Abo when her contract concludes later this year, a move that could further destabilize Nine's flagship morning program.

The current shake-up follows Stefanovic's exit from Channel Nine, which was reportedly linked to a controversial interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson on his independent podcast. Reports suggest that Stefanovic, who has been with Nine for approximately 25 years, may not secure a role on other Australian commercial television networks. Channel 7 and Network Ten have reportedly ruled out hiring him.

Stefanovic and Nine are understood to have reached an undisclosed six-figure settlement regarding his contract termination. He had six months and over $1 million remaining on his 12-month contract. Following his departure, Stefanovic posted a video expressing his happiness at being "truly independent."
