Buffalo Bills pass rusher Bradley Chubb stated that his comments regarding "chipping techniques" led to an altercation with Los Angeles Rams offensive lineman Alaric Jackson after their recent game. Jackson punched Chubb following the Bills' 37-34 overtime victory on Monday.
Jackson was initially suspended for two games but that penalty has since been reduced to one contest. Chubb, speaking on Wednesday, clarified the nature of his remarks.
"I went up to him, I said, 'We're gonna see y'all's ass again. And when we see ya'll again, that chipping ain't gonna save you, that tight end, that guard is not going to save you,'" Chubb recounted. "He said, ‘What’d you say?’ He walked up on me. I said, ‘Like I said,’ I put my hand in his face, ‘That chip’s not gonna save you. The guard’s not gonna save you.’ And then boom."
Video footage captured Jackson exchanging jerseys with Bills defensive lineman Deone Walker after the game, while Chubb offered comments from a distance. Chubb, who acknowledged initiating the conversation, turned away from Jackson, but the Rams lineman approached him, leading to the face-to-face encounter near the midfield logo.
Jackson then struck Chubb with his right hand, dislodging Chubb's hat before teammates intervened. The "chipping" technique involves a skill player bumping a defender during a play to impede their pass rush, thereby aiding offensive line protection.
Chubb also commented on the Rams' perceived "front running" before the Bills' game-winning field goal block in overtime. After being struck, Chubb stated he prioritized his team's needs and leadership role.
"They brought me here to play and to be a leader," Chubb said. "I felt like if I would have reacted, if I would have done anything in both of those situations, like I’m not doing what they brought me here to do."
He added, "We're going to learn from it. Me personally, I'm going to learn have my hands up or wear a helmet, one of the two. It's a growing moment for all of us, everybody in this building."
Chubb expressed belief that he and Jackson might encounter each other again, potentially in the Super Bowl, and noted that Jackson has not yet contacted him. Chubb registered two total tackles during the game.
