Brad Pitt is seeking a court order compelling Angelina Jolie to produce financial records detailing her income from 2017 to 2019. Pitt's lawyers allege that Jolie has withheld these specific documents despite having previously agreed to provide them.
According to court filings obtained by The Daily Mail, Jolie claimed in prior legal documents that she had "largely put her career on hold" and foregone "years of compensation" following their separation in 2016. She had reportedly agreed to produce financial records from 2017 to 2021, but has allegedly only provided documents for 2020 and 2021.
Pitt's legal team is requesting records that show Jolie's annual income and profit participation statements from the 2017-2019 period. These documents are intended to test the accuracy of her claims that she was under economic pressure and that Pitt exerted control over her finances, which she has cited as a reason for selling her stake in their winery, Chateau Miraval, in 2019. Pitt's filing states that the requests seek information directly bearing on Jolie's assertions that she forwent years of compensation and that Miraval was her most important asset, with Pitt's control over distributions giving him significant leverage.
In response to Pitt's pursuit of these records, Jolie's team has argued that Pitt's interpretation of her statements is misleading and that digging into her finances from 2017-2019 poses a "serious invasion" of her privacy rights. They contend that her claims were about seeking "financial independence from her ex-husband," not general financial distress. Jolie's representatives have also stated that she has already provided financial records for 2020 and 2021, which they believe offer sufficient insight into her financial condition, and that going back further is an invasion of privacy.
The legal dispute over financial records is part of the broader, protracted legal battle between Pitt and Jolie since their 2016 separation. The couple, once a prominent Hollywood pair, have been engaged in public disagreements over child custody and their shared assets, including the winery. Their split reportedly stemmed from an alleged altercation on a private flight with their six children in 2016. Jolie later filed for divorce, and the ensuing years have seen numerous court filings and public statements from both sides.
Jolie's legal team has also previously stated that Pitt's demand for a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) was linked to Jolie's financial condition, but they claim his summaries are inaccurate and that the phrase "financially cornered" was not used by Jolie. They assert the issue is not about needing money, but about untangling her finances from Pitt, whom they describe as controlling and abusive. In June filings, Jolie's side noted that while she felt she had no obligation to produce records for 2020 and 2021, she did so to narrow the dispute and that this production should have concluded the matter.
