Brad Pitt has shared that he has stopped abstaining from alcohol after seven years, stating he is now drinking again but in a much more mindful way. The actor, 62, made the revelation during a recent interview with Esquire, noting that he has gotten "back off the wagon."
Pitt clarified that he is now able to have a few glasses of wine but cannot consume large quantities. "I have to be professional about it," he said. He also noted that he enjoys mornings and does not want to miss them by drinking too much the night before.
His relationship with alcohol has been a complex subject, previously linked to issues within his family. In 2016, his split from Angelina Jolie occurred amid accusations of a volatile plane incident where Pitt was alleged to have been drinking and to have poured alcohol on Jolie and their children. Jolie's 2022 court filing stated that Pitt poured beer on her and beer and red wine on the children during the flight. Pitt denied these allegations, and an FBI investigation did not result in charges.
Following the incident, Pitt announced he had quit drinking and had been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He told GQ in 2017 that he had "run it to the ground" with alcohol and that he could "drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka." He described his time in AA as a freeing experience, where he confided in other men about his "ugly sides."
The winery Chateau Miraval, which Pitt and Jolie purchased during their marriage, has become a focal point in their ongoing legal disputes. Court documents indicate that Jolie sold her stake partly due to Pitt's "acknowledged problem of alcohol abuse on their family."
Pitt also spoke about the estrangement from his children with Jolie, admitting he experienced a period of suicidal thoughts due to the oppressive pain of the situation. He explained that while he never intended to act on these thoughts, he understood suicide as a form of relief from intense pain. He also touched upon his innate survival instincts kicking in during such difficult times.
In recent years, several of Pitt's children with Jolie have petitioned to drop his surname, including Vivienne, Zahara, and Maddox. Shiloh also legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie. His twin son Knox is the only other sibling who has not publicly taken steps to drop the surname.
Pitt is currently in a relationship with jewelry executive Ines de Ramon. His upcoming films include "Heart of the Beast" and Quentin Tarantino's "The Adventures of Cliff Booth."
