A nine-year-old boy demonstrated remarkable composure when an armed robber entered a Bank of America in Mesa, Arizona, on July 13, as he and his grandmother were present to open his first bank account.
Hunter was with his grandmother, Colette Jordan, in the bank lobby when he noticed an individual wearing a ski mask and black hoodie. The boy observed the suspect jump over the teller's counter and point an object at the teller. Hunter then calmly approached his grandmother, tapped her on the shoulder, and stated, "Nana, the bank's being robbed."
Mesa police responded to the bank, located near Broadway Road and Greenfield Road, after receiving a report of a robbery. Officers found that a female suspect, identified as Leetasha Yazzie, 41, had allegedly threatened a bank employee with a knife and stolen $3,515.
Witnesses inside the bank, including customers and employees, reported being terrified during the incident. The bank employee stated they believed the suspect was capable of stabbing them.
Yazzie was apprehended shortly after in a vehicle near the bank. According to police, she allegedly confessed to the robbery during an interview. A search of her vehicle reportedly recovered the stolen money and other evidence linked to the crime. Yazzie was subsequently charged with robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and four counts of disorderly conduct.
Hunter told AZFamily that he remained calm because he believed getting scared might draw the robber's attention and endanger them. Jordan stated her immediate concern was ensuring her grandson's safety.
While the bank was on lockdown during the incident, the bank manager proceeded to open Hunter's account using his $160 savings. "Since we were stuck there, the bank manager continued to open his account. So we got all the paperwork done," Jordan said. She later commented that they would likely utilize online banking more in the future.
Mesa police commended Hunter for his bravery and composure. "His awareness and willingness to speak up were commendable," a police statement noted.
