A 12-year-old boy, the son of a retired NYPD sergeant, was fatally shot by a stray bullet Saturday in the Bronx while on his way to a bodega. Jacob Freytes had stopped to shake a neighbor's hand before heading to the store, where he was struck and later died from his injuries.

The incident occurred in the Mount Eden neighborhood, an area known for gang activity, according to law enforcement sources. Police are investigating whether the shooting is connected to a dispute between local gangs, possibly the Trinitarios and Sev Side Pinni.

Witnesses reported that a gunman opened fire on rivals outside the Wanda Deli Grocery near the Grand Concourse. Security footage captured the young victim stumbling back into the store clutching his chest before collapsing. The shooting also injured two other individuals who were involved in the altercation.

Jacob, described by neighbors as a bright and good kid who enjoyed sports, was the son of retired NYPD Sergeant Jesus Freytes. His mother is reportedly devastated by the loss.

Authorities have taken a person of interest into custody, but no charges have been filed as the investigation into the motive and circumstances of the shooting continues.
