An Oceanside neighborhood was locked down Sunday morning after suspicious containers marked with “biohazard” warnings and “top secret” labels were discovered, prompting a bomb squad response. The containers were found near the intersection of Castellanos Drive and Vandegrift Boulevard in the North Valley neighborhood around 10:15 a.m.
The Oceanside Fire Department’s hazmat team was dispatched to the scene before requesting assistance from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Bomb/Arson Unit. The containers, described as cans and bottles, were reportedly wrapped with caution tape and bore the “top secret” markings.
Authorities established a perimeter around the items as hazmat specialists and sheriff’s officials worked to identify their contents. Vandegrift Boulevard was closed between Castellanos Drive and East Parker Street. Residents in the 700 block of Arthur Avenue and the 4900 block of El Mirlo Drive were instructed to shelter in place.
Officials have since lifted the shelter-in-place order and stated that there is no longer an explosive hazard threat. However, they have not yet confirmed if the containers hold explosive or hazardous substances. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and the public has been urged to avoid the area.
