A Boeing 737 cargo plane operated by K2 Airways has disappeared over the Arabian Sea, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation. The aircraft, identified as K2 Airways Flight 1732, was on a cargo flight from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, to Karachi, Pakistan, when it went missing Tuesday evening.
Contact with the flight was lost around 9:21 p.m. local time, approximately 155 nautical miles west of Karachi. Just minutes before communication ceased, the crew reported a "navigation system problem." Radar data indicated the aircraft was rapidly descending before contact was lost.
Officials confirmed Wednesday that wreckage from the plane was recovered 53 miles south of Ormara. However, no crew members have been found. The search efforts are ongoing, involving Pakistan Navy and Air Force assets, including the frigate PNS Zulfiqar and an ATR aircraft.
The missing aircraft was a Boeing 737-400 freighter, approximately 27 years old, with registration AP-BOI. According to aviation databases, it was the sole aircraft in K2 Airways' fleet. The airline, established in 2018, recently received this Boeing 737-400SF aircraft on July 1, 2024, with the stated aim of connecting businesses through safe and efficient air cargo operations in Pakistan.
Experts have noted the unusual nature of the plane's rapid descent. Aviation expert Imran Aslam commented that even in cases of engine failure, aircraft typically glide rather than falling abruptly from the sky.
K2 Airways Flight 1732 had five crew members on board. Search-and-rescue operations are being conducted in the Arabian Sea, with both military and civilian authorities activated in response to the incident.
