Bill Maher, host of HBO's 'Real Time,' has lauded the international visitors participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, suggesting they are providing a valuable service by reminding Americans of their country's positive attributes.

During a segment on his show, Maher highlighted how fans from various nations, many of whom were concluding their World Cup journeys in the United States, had embraced their time in the country. He noted the widespread enjoyment observed among fans, citing examples like Scottish fans' active engagement across the East Coast. Maher observed that social media had been flooded with videos of these tourists expressing positive sentiments about everyday American life, which they often take for granted.

"I am loving that the World Cup has brought to our shores all of these people that are doing Americans the service of reminding us, just when we needed it, on our big (250th) birthday, that actually, this place is kind of awesome," Maher stated, receiving applause from his audience. He acknowledged that while America has its challenges, it should not be held to an impossible standard of perfection.

Mather also drew a parallel between America's achievements and the enthusiasm of its visitors. He listed notable American contributions such as the invention of the light bulb, telephone, smartphone, airplane, and personal computers, alongside the invention of the party-sized bag of Xtra Flamin' Hot Cheetos. The segment, which also touched on the tournament's success off the pitch, aimed to underscore the positive public image aspects stemming from the World Cup.

Maher's remarks come amid discussions about the United States' image, with some commentators, like a USA Today columnist, expressing a more critical view, particularly in relation to politics and figures like Donald Trump. However, Maher's segment focused on the perspective of foreign visitors embracing the American experience, framing the World Cup as a success in showcasing the country's appeal to an international audience. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has seen significant fan engagement across North America.
