Host Bill Maher has publicly called out New York politicians Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Zohran Mamdani for declining invitations to appear on his HBO show, "Real Time." Maher voiced his frustration over the weekend on X, formerly Twitter, sharing a clip from his recent interview with Republican Senator JD Vance.

"I would love to have @AOC and @ZohranKMamdani on the show, but I can't subpoena the guests," Maher wrote. He contrasted this with Republicans, including Vance, whom he praised for appearing on the panel show and "taking their beating like a man."

Maher noted that it is often the politicians he votes for, the Democrats, who are reluctant to engage with his program. "It’s the people I vote for, they’re the ones who won’t talk to me. That’s odd, isn’t it?" he remarked.

During his interview with Vance on Friday, Maher mentioned other prominent Democrats he has struggled to get on his show, including Vice President Kamala Harris and a progressive congressional candidate from New York's 13th district, Darializa Avila Chevalier. Maher stated it took him eight years to secure an appearance from former President Barack Obama, who last appeared on "Real Time" in November 2016.

Maher, who identifies as a longtime Democrat, suggested his faith in the party is wavering due to what he perceives as the influence of Democratic socialist policies championed by figures like Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez. He specifically mentioned an "obsession with Israel" and opposition to capitalism and prisons as policy directions that trouble him. Maher indicated that if the Democratic Party continues on this path, his vote is "in play."

He shared with Vance that he does not adhere to party lines when deciding his vote, prioritizing what he believes is best for the country. Maher confirmed in May that he voted for Kamala Harris in 2024, but also noted on his podcast "Club Random" that Democrats are often hesitant to appear on his show unless they are "pre-adored."

"Like, because they're such ps," he said at the time. "Democrats are ps about going anywhere that they're not already pre-adored. Not all of them, but I mean, somebody...Kamala Harris, I mean, like I always say to my woke friends, we voted for the same person. You're just why she lost."
