Comedian Bill Maher has criticized liberal academics for what he describes as their tendency to disparage Western civilization, while simultaneously enjoying the freedoms and institutions it has produced. During a recent episode of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," Maher engaged in a discussion with Wesleyan University President Michael Roth about the perception of Israel and Western society.

Maher contended that Western civilization is often discussed as if it were a negative concept, rather than acknowledging that it provided the basis for progressive ideals. "Western civilization is what gave everyone who’s a progressive the things they should be most proud of," Maher stated during the conversation.

Roth acknowledged that a significant portion of students at his university share this perspective. Maher expressed surprise that professors are imparting such views to students, humorously suggesting that the students might be learning it from his show.

When the conversation turned to Israel, Maher noted that the country was historically viewed as an "outpost of Western civilization." He expressed dismay at the shift in perception, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza following the Oct. 7 attacks. Roth indicated that while Maher might not be universally "welcome" on campus, he would be if he brought a substantial donation.

Maher, a notable donor to the Democratic Party, expressed disbelief that his past financial contributions to the party were insufficient to warrant a welcome at the university. Roth humorously responded that a million-dollar donation would ensure a welcoming reception.

Maiher's criticism is directed at what he perceives as a pattern among some academics to devalue the principles and achievements of Western societies, even as they benefit from the liberties and systems those societies have established.
