Bill Belichick's tenure at the University of North Carolina has been complicated by a new investigation from the College Sports Commission, a body established in 2025 to enforce NCAA compliance following the House vs. NCAA settlement and the evolving Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) landscape. This probe adds to the program's challenges just weeks before its 2026 season opener against TCU.
The investigation follows a separate internal matter that has resulted in the paid administrative leave of Michael Lombardi, Belichick's general manager and longtime associate. The university announced Lombardi's leave on Monday morning, stating that it is standard procedure for personnel matters and that leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from further comment.
Lombardi, who joined the Tar Heels in December 2024 with an annual salary of $1.5 million, making him the highest-paid general manager in college sports, was responsible for overseeing player personnel and roster construction. His long-standing professional relationship with Belichick includes previous stints with the Cleveland Browns and the New England Patriots.
This period of scrutiny comes as Belichick, 74, navigates his second season leading the college program. His inaugural campaign concluded with a 4-8 record, drawing criticism for his roster management and an approach described as running UNC like an NFL franchise. The team is set to begin its 2026 season under the shadow of these multiple investigations.
Lombardi previously defended Belichick amidst public attention concerning his relationship with girlfriend Jordon Hudson, 25, particularly after a notable CBS interview in June 2025. Lombardi dismissed criticism of the relationship as "noise" and a "false narrative," emphasizing his and Belichick's focus on the football program.
The decision to place Lombardi on leave was reportedly made by UNC itself, not Belichick. The head coach has not yet commented on the development. With two active investigations and pressure mounting for improved on-field performance, the Tar Heels face a challenging start to their upcoming season.
