Randy Villegas, a Democratic candidate for California's 22nd Congressional District and a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders, has promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within academic settings, describing them as a "social justice-driven duty" in his scholarly work. Villegas is challenging Republican Rep. David Valadao in a race considered a key contest for House control.
Villegas, a political science professor at College of the Sequoias and a trustee on the Visalia school board, co-authored a 2022 paper asserting that DEI principles are fundamental to the mission of community college educators. The paper, published as part of a collection on navigating graduate studies, states that "At the heart of community college teaching is diversity, equity, and inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching." It further argues that community colleges "commit to teaching excellence and to a social justice-driven duty to accessibility."
In the paper, Villegas and his co-authors contended that a commitment to diversity and inclusion extends beyond the classroom, influencing the communities where students live. They proposed that students' "social and economic realities" should inform course design.
These writings predate the Trump administration's initiative to eliminate DEI mandates but offer insight into Villegas' perspective on DEI and social justice in higher education. In his dissertation, titled "Voices from the Valley of Vulnerability," Villegas identified himself as a "former community organizer and scholar activist," asserting that activism can be integral to scholarly work. He argued that such activism, stemming from his identity and life experiences, enhanced his research and provided access to information.
Villegas' academic work also details his involvement in grassroots activism, including organizing May Day demonstrations, protesting at an immigrant detention center, and collaborating with community groups on progressive causes. He criticized educational institutions for being "anti-political" and praised community organizations for "actively politicizing and socializing youth" and empowering them as "agents of change."
Beyond his research, Villegas helped lead the Central Valley Freedom Summer (CVFS) program in 2018. This initiative connected students with community organizations for voter outreach and grassroots organizing on issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, immigration, environmental justice, and racial inequality. CVFS alumni have gone on to establish activist groups, including LOUD for Tomorrow, described as a "queer and trans BIPOC youth-led" organization.
The Republican National Committee has criticized Villegas, with spokesperson Nick Poche stating, "Randy Villegas was cooked up in a lab to be the radical left's perfect woke freak. The only thing he cares about is political power and his far-left agenda."
A spokesperson for Villegas responded to the criticism by focusing on Valadao's record, stating, "David Valadao ripped away healthcare and food assistance from Valley families to hand his billionaire buddies a tax break." The spokesperson also accused Valadao's campaign of being financed by "domestic abusers."
