Ben Stein, the actor and commentator recognized for his role as the droning economics teacher in the 1986 film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," was recently seen in Los Angeles at the age of 81. He was observed being pushed in a wheelchair by a caregiver, while dressed in a coat and tie.

Stein's career has spanned multiple fields, beginning with a stint as a speechwriter for U.S. presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. His father, Herbert Stein, also held a significant position as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers in their administrations. During this period, Ben Stein also faced unfounded rumors that he was the anonymous source known as "Deep Throat" in the Watergate scandal.

His breakthrough into popular culture came with his portrayal of the economics teacher in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." The role, which allowed him to ad-lib dialogue based on his own economic background, became iconic. He later reprised the character in "The Wonder Years" and appeared in the 1994 film "The Mask" alongside Jim Carrey.

In addition to his acting work, Stein co-hosted the game show "Win Ben Stein's Money" with Jimmy Kimmel from 1997 to 2003. He has also authored numerous books and established himself as a conservative political commentator, contributing to various media outlets.

From 1997 through 2003 he was a fixture on Comedy Central as the host of Win Ben Stein's Money, which he initially compered alongside Jimmy Kimmel

Stein's commentary has sometimes generated controversy, including his views on subprime mortgages prior to the 2008 economic crash and remarks made in 2014 concerning race in America. Most recently, in May, he appeared at the TCM Classic Film Festival with co-star Alan Ruck to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
