David Beckham, accompanied by his sons Romeo and Cruz and their girlfriends, Jackie Apostel and Kim Turnbull, was in attendance at the World Cup Final held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday night.
The family occupied a box to watch the match, with Victoria Beckham also present. This appearance followed an earlier semi-final where the Beckham family, including David and Victoria, appeared visibly distressed after England's 2-1 loss to Argentina.
During the semi-final match, David Beckham had expressed his difficulty in choosing a winner for the final, citing his dual loyalties to Spain and his friend Lionel Messi, who plays for his Inter Miami team. "I played in Spain, so I have a huge affection for Spain as a country and obviously for their football team," Beckham stated. "And with Argentina, they have Lionel (Messi). ... He's an exceptional player, but an exceptional person with the right values... I'm going to sit on the fence. I don't know who's going to win. I want Lionel to do incredibly well because he's an exceptional person and player. But Spain are going to be tough to play against."
Beckham's indecisiveness drew boos from the crowd, which he and former player Kaka, also present, laughed off. He remarked, "I haven't been booed for a while."
Earlier in the tournament, the Beckhams had witnessed England's exit from the semi-finals. Images showed David and Victoria with their heads in their hands as Argentina secured their victory. The Three Lions had taken a 1-0 lead with a goal from Antony Gordon, but Argentina responded with two goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martinez within seven minutes.
Victoria Beckham had celebrated England's earlier goal enthusiastically, jumping out of her seat and into David's arms. This reaction contrasted with her more subdued demeanor during a previous quarter-final match, which had previously become a viral meme. David Beckham had humorously defended his wife at the time, suggesting she was celebrating internally.
The family had joined England fans in singing the national anthem before the semi-final, but their display was reportedly met with loud booing from Argentina supporters. David Beckham's position was particularly delicate, having to watch his country's team compete against his friend Messi and his team.
