BBC News presenter Maryam Moshiri has shared details of her two-year journey living with polycythaemia vera (PV), a rare and treatable blood cancer. Diagnosed in November 2024, Moshiri described the condition as chronic, meaning it can be managed effectively but not cured.
Speaking with colleague Lucy Hockings, Moshiri expressed gratitude that her general practitioner identified the cancer early. She reflected on her feelings following the diagnosis. PV is a condition where the bone marrow makes too many red blood cells, which can make the blood thicker and lead to complications. While there is no cure for PV, treatments are available to manage the condition and reduce the risk of complications.
Moshiri's early diagnosis allowed for prompt management of her condition, and she has maintained a positive outlook, stating, "I have chronic cancer but I'm not going to die."
