Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has established a substantial fundraising lead over challenger Nithya Raman in the period following the June primary election. Campaign finance filings show Bass raised $511,687, nearly three times the $172,927 collected by Raman, as the candidates prepare for the November runoff.
Bass's campaign reported a total of $3.77 million raised since its inception, compared to $1.19 million for Raman, creating a gap of approximately $2.6 million. This financial dominance marks a resurgence for Bass, who was out-raised by former reality television personality Spencer Pratt in the final weeks before the primary.
During the primary's closing weeks, between April 19 and May 16, Pratt led fundraising with $2.72 million. Raman collected about $401,000 during that period, which included a $60,000 loan she made to her own campaign. Bass raised $283,000 in the same timeframe.
Independent expenditure committees have significantly favored Bass, pouring more than $2.55 million into supporting her campaign. In contrast, approximately $88,000 has been spent supporting Raman. Conversely, outside groups have spent about $1.2 million opposing Raman, with only around $15,000 spent in opposition to Bass.
Bass stated that June was the strongest fundraising month of her entire campaign, attributing it to voters understanding the election's stakes. Her campaign has also qualified for an additional $675,368 in public matching funds, bringing its available cash for the general election to over $1.18 million.
The candidates continue to draw support from distinct demographics. Raman's contributors include television writers, producers, entertainment executives, and technology workers. Bass's donors consist of attorneys, nonprofit executives, healthcare leaders, real estate professionals, and long-standing civic and political figures.
While Bass leads in overall fundraising and independent expenditures, Raman maintains an advantage in the city's public financing program, having received roughly $1.77 million in public matching funds compared to Bass's approximately $1.26 million.
In the race for Los Angeles city attorney, Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidate Marissa Roy has also outraised her opponent. Roy collected $73,776 compared to former federal prosecutor John McKinney's $3,000 in the first reporting period of the general election. Roy also reported $144,607 in cash on hand, nearly double McKinney's $72,546.
