Actress Barbara Eden, 95, has assured fans she is "okay" after a last-minute cancellation of her appearance at the Cinecon Classic Film Festival in Los Angeles. The festival organizers initially announced that Eden had to withdraw due to "a sudden illness."
Eden, best known for her iconic role as Jeannie in the 1960s sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie," took to Instagram to clarify her condition. She stated that she is not ill but is experiencing adverse effects from a new medication prescribed by her doctor. "My doctor very recently prescribed a brand-new medication that turned out to have some nasty side effects," Eden explained. "Due to the discomfort, my doctor ordered me to remain at home until it can be sorted out."
She expressed her regret for the late cancellation and appreciation for the concern shown by fans and organizers. "What awful timing for this to happen! My deepest appreciation to everyone for the concern," she wrote. "This is just a speedbump! I expect to be out and about as soon as I’m given the go-ahead!"
Eden was scheduled to be honored at the festival with the Cinecon Legacy Award and was to participate in a screening of her 1961 film "All Hands on Deck." She was expected to introduce the movie alongside her co-star Pat Boone. Boone later accepted the award on her behalf. The Cinecon Legacy Award recognizes professionals for their lifetime achievements and contributions to the film industry. This year marked the 62nd edition of the festival, which celebrates classic films and stars from Hollywood's Golden Age.
Eden's career spans over seven decades in film, television, and theater. She starred opposite Elvis Presley in "Flaming Star" and had roles in "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" and "Harper Valley P.T.A." On television, she appeared in "Dallas" and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" in addition to "I Dream of Jeannie." She received two Golden Globe nominations for her performance as Jeannie and was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1988. In 2023, she received the Legend Award for Lifetime Achievement at the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards. Her most recent film role was playing Mrs. Claus in "My Adventures with Santa" in 2019.
Eden has expressed a continued interest in acting, recently stating in an interview that she would be open to playing a villain if a role was "well written."
