Barack Obama has acknowledged that his marriage to Michelle Obama has not been an "equal partnership," while his wife reflected on the "ups and downs" of their relationship.

In a recent interview with People magazine, the former president, 64, stated, "I don't know if it's been an equal partnership, but it's worked out for me pretty well. I've gotten more out of it than she has." He added that for Michelle, 62, the experience has likely been "more of a mixed bag."

Barack Obama recalled knowing "almost immediately" that Michelle was "the one." He described her as "a one-of-a-kind woman with the integrity and character, smarts and values to make me better." He also noted her role in providing their daughters, Malia, 27, and Sasha, 25, with a strong foundation.

Michelle Obama, in turn, praised her husband, saying he "is always thinking about reflecting the light on other people" and expressing pride in "how my husband showed up in that role [as President of the United States], how he shows up every day."

She described them as each other's "counterbalance." Michelle suggested that without her husband's influence, her life might have been "smaller," but his presence offered their family "a broader sense of what's possible in life." She credited him with encouraging her to think beyond her legal career and giving her the courage to pursue broader possibilities, stating, "He was my ballast. He was like, 'I got you.' And however hard it’s been, the ups and downs, he’s got me."

These reflections come amid months of speculation about the state of their marriage following their time in the White House. Previously, Barack Obama confessed to "genuine tension" in their home when Michelle desired him to reduce his public duties to spend more time with her. Michelle Obama herself has spoken about challenging periods in their marriage, including a remark in 2022 that "there were 10 years where I couldn't stand my husband," and a comment on the "IMO" podcast in April 2025 that a bad decade is to be expected in a long marriage.

Rumors of separation were amplified when Michelle Obama missed two high-profile events attended by Barack Obama in January 2025. However, in recent weeks, she has offered public praise for her husband. During a speech at the Obama Presidential Center on June 18, she expressed being "left in awe" throughout their marriage and commended his "truest essence, stubborn optimism and unflinching courage," as well as his "dazzling brilliance, unpretentious decency, ferocious work ethic and unshakable moral fiber."

She also highlighted his accomplishments in office, including his work on the economy and healthcare. "Barack, there are no words to express how proud I am of the way you showed up and continue to show up every single day," she said. "It has been an honor to be by your side. You have made me a better person and have given us all an example that we should strive to emulate."
