South Wales Police are increasing patrols along riverside paths in Cardiff following a spate of attacks by youths in balaclavas, including an attempted assault on plain-clothed officers. The Taff Trail, a popular route for pedestrians and cyclists, has been the scene of multiple incidents in areas including Hailey Park, Gabalfa, and Llandaff.

Parents have reported that their children have been targeted while cycling on the trail since June. South Wales Police are increasing their presence on their section of the Taff Trail, which extends for 55 miles from Brecon to Cardiff.

While specific crime statistics for the Taff Trail in June were not available, police arrested boys aged 13 and 11 earlier this month in connection with incidents. According to the force's crime map, the Llandaff North area saw 34 reports of anti-social behavior in June, with the Riverside area recording 18 and Gabalfa eight.

During a cyclist safety meeting on July 28, Inspector Tim Ursell stated that a youth was arrested on the Taff Trail a couple of weeks prior after targeting two plain-clothed officers and being "fully prepared to assault them." The force confirmed receiving a 999 call reporting an attempted robbery near Sophia Gardens at approximately 3:45 p.m. BST on July 23. A 13-year-old from Old St Mellons was arrested, and following a plain-clothes patrol, an 11-year-old boy from Penylan was also taken into custody. Both have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The Taff Trail, along with Bute Park, has been identified by the police as areas experiencing a higher level of youth anti-social behavior. The incidents have prompted concern among local residents and increased police visibility in the affected areas.
