An Iraqi brigadier general was killed and five other people were wounded Thursday when Iraqi military personnel and municipal workers attempting to remove illegal housing structures came under fire in Baghdad's southern Dora district.
A security official confirmed the death of the brigadier general and injuries to a police officer and four municipal workers. The official spoke on condition of anonymity.
The state news agency also reported the incident, stating that the Baghdad municipality had received legal orders to remove the illegal structures prior to the operation. Police and armed forces sealed off the area following the shooting, and the Baghdad Operations Commander visited the scene.
The Dora neighborhood is known for its large agricultural areas, where the construction of illegal housing is not uncommon.
