Jennifer Rubio, co-founder of the luggage company Away, and Stewart Butterfield, the entrepreneur behind Flickr and Slack, have announced their decision to separate after six years of marriage. The couple shared the news in a joint statement on Instagram Wednesday.

"With deep love and respect for one another, we’ve made the decision to separate," the statement read. "Though we will no longer be married, we are still a family and what matters most to us remains the same. Our children will always come first, and we are committed to raising them in a loving environment with two active and present parents."

Rubio and Butterfield were married in 2020 and have two children together. They also emphasized their continued partnership in other aspects of their lives.

"We’re also partners in the life we’ve built together," the statement continued. "Our families, friendships, and communities are deeply intertwined, and we are committed to nurturing those bonds. We remain dedicated to the arts, to philanthropy through the Rubio Butterfield Foundation, and to the shared businesses, investments, and causes that have long been important to us."

Sources close to the couple expressed surprise at the announcement, with one noting they had recently hosted friends on their boat and another suggesting the separation was not entirely sudden, with the pair having "privately been moving down this path for some time." Friends indicated they remain on good terms and have continued to socialize together over the summer.

Rubio and Butterfield have maintained a public presence, notably attending the Met Gala in May. That same month, they were named trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art following a $23 million pledge to the institution for internships. Rubio had also shared social media posts detailing their attendance at various international fashion and art events, including the Venice Biennale and Dior and Chanel-affiliated events, and the announcement of a new puppy.

The couple has also accumulated a significant real estate portfolio, reportedly valued at over $140 million. Between 2021 and 2022, they acquired five properties across three states. This includes a 20,000-acre ranch in New Mexico, purchased from designer Tom Ford, which has served as a filming location for several movies. Their holdings also include properties in Aspen, Colorado, and Southampton, New York, as well as the Sky Bridge apartment in Tribeca, which was reportedly listed for sale at the end of 2025. Their art collection is said to include works by artists such as Cy Twombly, Ed Ruscha, and Richard Prince.
