Author Karol Markowicz has stated that she will not financially support her children's attendance at Harvard University or Columbia University, citing concerns about progressive indoctrination at these institutions. Markowicz shared these views in a recent opinion piece, where she described a broader parental anxiety that colleges have become "indoctrination factories."
Markowicz's comments gained wider attention following a discussion by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, about their daughter's potential college choices. Campos-Duffy expressed concern that attending a place like Harvard could "undo" the values instilled in their daughter.
The author noted that this sentiment is not new, recalling similar worries shared by parents when she co-authored a book on the subject three years prior. She stated that some parents reported their children were "pushed to conform with every leftist idea" in college, and in some heartbreaking cases, became estranged from their families.
Markowicz's own experience in the late 1990s allegedly involved receiving good grades for expressing leftist viewpoints she did not personally hold. She extended this concern to her own teenagers, explicitly naming Columbia and Harvard as institutions off-limits for financial support due to their perceived environments. She pointed to an incident where Jewish students at Columbia reportedly sued the administration for protection.
Regarding Harvard, Markowicz cited the university's history of fostering "extreme far-left ideas" and its use of its endowment for political causes like opposing fossil fuels and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She also referenced data from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), which indicated that a significant percentage of Harvard students are reportedly open to shouting down speakers and, in some cases, using violence to block speech. The author also mentioned the controversy surrounding former Harvard President Claudine Gay's tenure.
Markowicz suggested that parents, regardless of their political affiliation, are increasingly hesitant about the environment at top-tier schools. She noted a trend of increasing popularity for Southern schools and institutions like Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, and the University of Chicago, which she believes champion free speech. The underlying concern, she articulated, is the risk of children being "radicalized beyond recognition" or alienated from their families due to ideological shifts experienced in college.
