A teacher has detailed the terrifying encounter with a great white shark that attacked her while swimming, describing how she fought back and saved her life.
Leah Stewart, 34, was swimming at Coogee Beach in Australia on June 13 when she was attacked. She spent two weeks in a coma and underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of one of her arms. Stewart is set to share her story in an extended interview, marking her first since the attack.
In a promotional clip, Stewart recounted the moment the shark's face was approximately 30 centimeters from hers. "I'm like, 'It's going to get my face, it's going to bite my face'". Stewart stated she knew she had to fight back. "I've got to try and punch it. I've got to try and push it away or else it's going to bite my head off". She described deciding to use a "left hook" as she is right-handed.
Stewart also spoke about her survival instincts kicking in for the sake of her one-year-old daughter. "All I was thinking of was August and I thought, 'she's not going to have a mum'".
The interview will also feature the emergency services call made immediately after the attack. "Hi, we've got a shark attack at Coogee Beach... There's a lot of blood," a female beachgoer told the operator.
Following the attack, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support Stewart and her family, raising over $558,000. Stewart expressed her gratitude for the support, stating that it has played a significant role in her recovery.
"I still have a long way to go, but my recovery has been remarkable, and a huge part of that is because of the absolute army of love, support, prayers and encouragement surrounding my family and I from all over the world," she said. Stewart vowed to make the most of her second chance at life and to give back.
