The death of a 16-year-old girl in Sydney after a suspected sexual choking incident has prompted calls from Australian officials to review laws surrounding pornography, particularly concerning depictions of strangulation.

Emergency services were called to a home in Elanora Heights on August 23, responding to reports that the girl was having a seizure. Paramedics found her unresponsive and she was placed in an induced coma before being airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital. She died two days later.

Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. Authorities have been informed that the girl was allegedly involved in a consensual sexual act involving choking, during which she lost consciousness and had a seizure. A 16-year-old male, known to the girl, is cooperating with the investigation. No arrests have been made.

Friends and schoolmates have shared tributes on social media, remembering the teenager's kindness and vibrant personality. Her boyfriend posted a heartfelt message online: "I love you more than anything and I miss you more than you could ever imagine. Rest peacefully my love."

Following the incident, Australia's Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek commented on the need to address the prevalence of strangulation in sexual encounters. "There is something wrong with a situation where 60 per cent of young people say they've experienced strangulation during sexual encounters," Plibersek stated. "There is no safe way to strangle someone."

NSW Liberal leader Kellie Sloane has urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to consider introducing legislation similar to laws in the United Kingdom that criminalize depictions of strangulation and suffocation in pornography. Sloane argued that when pornography depicts acts capable of causing serious harm or death, it should not be categorized as mere adult entertainment, citing the need for inquiries and evidence of consequences.
