A childcare operator in Australia, Hamish Alexander Edward Tait, has been charged with 329 offenses against up to 150 children. The charges span from 2009 to 2025 and involve incidents at 62 different centers. Tait, 35, was arrested in July and had fought to keep his identity confidential, but a court lifted a non-publication order on Monday.
Tait operated the Wild Earthlings Nature Immersion playgroup, which used advertisements describing a belief in the sacredness of children and the Earth, and promising experiences to foster learning and growth. Promotional materials depicted Tait leading young children on nature walks. He also worked as an educator at Fit Kidz learning centers.
Police allege that Tait preyed on children, with many charges related to the production of child abuse material. Additional counts include intentionally sexually touching a child under ten and aggravated charges for allegedly filming individuals in private or recording their private parts without consent. The allegations arose from more than two million files seized from Tait's phone and computers, which reportedly contain child abuse images and a significant number of unique images.
One mother, identified only as Heather, expressed feelings of disgust, anger, and grief upon learning of the allegations. She had previously engaged Tait to care for her children and noted that he appeared to be a child advocate who spoke with respect and dignity.
Tait's legal team had argued for continued anonymity to protect his family's safety. However, a judge ruled against this in Parramatta Local Court this week. Authorities expect more parents may come forward now that Tait's identity and the list of centers where he worked have been published. Tait is a former student of Sydney's Barker College and holds a bachelor of teaching from Charles Sturt University.
