Arsenal's Max Dowman will miss three matches after his appeal against a straight red card received during a Carabao Cup loss at Fleetwood was rejected.
The 16-year-old midfielder was shown a red card in the 85th minute of the match following a challenge by Fleetwood's Harrison Neal. Although Dowman did not fully kick out, his foot made contact with Neal.
The game concluded in a 1-1 draw, with Fleetwood ultimately defeating Arsenal 5-3 on penalties. Arsenal submitted an appeal for Dowman's sending-off on Wednesday.
This marks Dowman's second red card this month, having also been sent off while representing England's Under-19 team.
Following the dismissal, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed disappointment, stating, "When we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to respect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate. It was very clear."
Dowman's dismissal was for violent conduct, which is defined by the laws of the game as when a player "uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball... regardless of whether contact is made."
The Gunners are currently short on wing options due to injuries to Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis, and Noni Madueke.
Arsenal is scheduled to return to Premier League action against Liverpool on Sunday.
