Actor Armie Hammer described the anti-migrant vigilante film "Citizen Vigilante," in which he stars, as "hateful" and "disgusting" after seeing it for the first time, according to a source within his camp speaking to Puck's Matthew Belloni.
Hammer, 39, plays a self-appointed avenger who targets "violent criminals, corrupt judges, and migrant gangs" in the movie, which has been praised by some on the online right for its anti-Muslim messaging. The film has been banned in Germany for its content.
The source stated that Hammer was "desperate for work" when he took the role. Upon watching the finished film, he was reportedly brought to tears and exclaimed, "F**k. This is hateful, disgusting. That was not the movie I thought we made."
"Citizen Vigilante" features a scene where Hammer's character executes an entire Syrian migrant family in their apartment. The director, Uwe Boll, is known for his prolific and often critically panned work.
Despite his strong reaction to the film's content, the source indicated that Hammer would consider starring in a sequel if the financial offer was substantial enough. "It would have to be life-changing money. Everyone has a breaking point," the source said, comparing Hammer's search for a significant independent film role to "looking for a needle in a haystack."
The film has gained significant attention, with Elon Musk posting it in its entirety on X for 48 hours following its release. A sequel is reportedly in the preproduction stages.
Hammer's career was significantly impacted in 2021 by accusations of sexual assault by multiple women. He has consistently denied these allegations, and in June 2023, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office declined to press charges due to insufficient evidence. He has admitted to emotional abuse in past relationships.
In early 2024, Hammer was reportedly attempting to sell timeshares in the Cayman Islands, where he lives. He was also working as a sober companion at the time, according to Belloni's reporting. Hammer and his ex-wife, Elizabeth Chambers, separated in 2023.
