An Arizona man accused of ambushing and killing his dentist over a perceived issue with dental work was killed during a shootout with Mexican authorities in Agua Prieta, officials announced.
Ernesto Rascón, 30, a U.S. citizen, died in a confrontation with the Criminal Investigation Ministerial Agency and other security forces while they were serving a warrant for the murder of oral surgeon Amed de Jesús Preciado Hernández, 42.
Authorities stated that Rascón opened fire on officers at a home in the Ejidal 2 neighborhood, and the agents returned fire. The suspect received medical aid after the confrontation but died at the scene. Two officers were injured during the shootout, one with a graze wound to the head and another with a leg injury. Both were treated and released.
According to reports, Rascón visited the dental office in Nogales, Sonora, on Oct. 15, where he had previously received treatment. He arrived agitated and demanded to be seen without an appointment. When the dentist was unable to accommodate him, Rascón allegedly waited in the parking lot.
Surveillance footage captured Rascón approaching the dentist's white truck, shooting into the driver's side door multiple times. Dr. Hernández died at the scene. Investigators believe Rascón blamed the dentist for leaving a tooth loose.
Rascón had prior incidents involving drug use and driving under the influence, according to authorities. Mexican authorities are coordinating with U.S. consular officials as the investigation continues.
