The Tonopah Valley High School football season in Arizona has been canceled by the Saddle Mountain Unified School District amid an ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving faculty members and students. The decision affects both varsity and junior varsity teams.
District Superintendent Michael Winters stated that the cancellation was due to an insufficient number of eligible players to safely field a team. The district confirmed it had initiated an investigation after receiving a report concerning a potential serious incident. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the Williams Police Department are reportedly investigating the allegations, which have been described as "complex."
The Sheriff's Office received a report regarding a "dry humping" incident that allegedly occurred at a football camp in July in Williams, Arizona. A spokesperson indicated that no victims had come forward to press charges. In response to the allegations, certain faculty members have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Saddle Mountain Unified School District emphasized that student safety and well-being are its highest priorities and that it is cooperating with law enforcement. "Because it is active, we are not able to speak about it, and we'll not be talking about this further until this investigation is complete," Winters said, urging the community to trust the investigative process and avoid speculation.
Investigators are continuing to interview individuals and gather evidence. The Sheriff's Office has stated its commitment to conducting a fair, thorough, and impartial investigation, taking appropriate steps to protect the privacy of those involved due to the sensitive nature of the allegations and student involvement.
Winters explained that the decision to cancel the season was made after discussions with students, parents, coaches, and community leaders, finding no viable path for the season to continue. He acknowledged the commitment of the students who wished to play and expressed gratitude for their patience and maturity during this difficult period. The district is also working to find alternative performance opportunities for the cheer team and band affected by the football season's cancellation.
