Matias Alejandro Pourrain, a 34-year-old Argentine semi-professional soccer player, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on August 6 while traveling with his team to a playoff match. Pourrain, a player for Miami United in the United Premier Soccer League, was arrested at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Pourrain was flagged, questioned, and arrested by federal agents after clearing TSA. He is currently being held at the Glades County Detention Center in Moore Haven, Florida. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Pourrain overstayed a temporary six-month visa he entered the United States on in 2019.
DHS stated that Pourrain legally entered the country on November 12, 2019, but remained past May 11, 2020, in violation of immigration laws. "Pourrain will remain in ICE custody pending his removal proceedings and will receive full due process," DHS said in a statement, characterizing his detention as a consequence of his choices.
Both Miami United and Pourrain's former team, Club de Lyon, have contested DHS's claims. Club de Lyon stated on social media that Pourrain entered the U.S. legally with a visa, has had a pending asylum case for years, possesses a valid work permit and Florida ID, and has no criminal record. The club further asserted that Pourrain has worked, paid taxes, maintained his documentation, and established a life and community in the U.S. during his time there.
Miami United expressed shock over Pourrain's detention, stating the club is providing him and his family with support and legal assistance. "We are cooperating with all parties involved and doing everything within our ability to help resolve this situation in the best possible way," a spokesperson for Miami United said. "Matias is not only an exceptional footballer, but an even better person and an important part of the Miami United family. His teammates, coaches, staff and the entire club stand firmly behind him and his family."
Pourrain's attorney, Regina de Moraes, has filed a motion for bond and requested a hearing date. In addition to playing for Miami United, Pourrain also coaches youth players in the club's academy.
