A scientific study has identified William Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra" as the most complex play among his works, owing to its intricate character relationships and narrative structure. The research, conducted by scientists at ETH Zurich, analyzed over 3,000 European plays, including 37 by Shakespeare, written between 472 and 2017.
"Antony and Cleopatra" scored 83 out of a possible 100 on the complexity scale, making it 5.9 times more complex than "The Tempest," which was found to be the easiest to follow. The study determined play complexity by examining the relationship networks between characters. "Antony and Cleopatra" features over 40 short, fragmented scenes spanning multiple locations and historical periods, alongside a large cast, contributing to its high complexity rating.
Other Shakespearean plays identified as highly complex include "Henry VI Part Two" and "Henry VI Part One," both noted for their intricate political power struggles and extensive noble characters. In contrast, well-known plays such as "Macbeth," "Romeo and Juliet," and "Hamlet" were found to fall in the middle of the complexity spectrum. "The Tempest," with its more linear plot, was ranked as the simplest.
Overall, the analyzed plays had an average complexity of 11.20 out of 100. Shakespeare's plays, however, tended to be on the more complex end, with an average score of 41.22. The study authors noted that while highly complex plays demand more from actors and audiences, this complexity does not necessarily hinder their success.
Historically, Shakespeare (baptised April 26, 1564 – died April 23, 1616) is regarded as one of the greatest dramatists in English literature, credited with writing 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and three long poems. His works, including "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet," and "Othello," continue to be performed globally and studied extensively. Born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, he began his career in London as an actor and writer, co-owning the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men, who built the Globe Theatre.
